Is it possible to install Acrobat 5 or 6 with PDF Writer and Distiller on a
print server and share it out rather than installing it on all the
workstations? I tried it a couple of years ago with Acrobat v4 and it would
not create the PDF files properly from the clients but worked fine at the
server. So I was wondering if anyone has done this with version 5 or 6 and
    gotten it to work properly.

    Thanks,
    Pete

  2. It may work but note that you would still have to buy x licences for x
workstations. Jaws PDF server (http://www.jawspdf.com/) may give you a
    better (and cheaper) solution.

  3. Legally you do have to buy Acrobat for every coputer that would be dumping a
postscript file into watched folder. If you really want to create great PDF
files check out our AcroPlot Pro software from www.cadzation.com. If you
use True Type Text in your drawings and use them propely (no oblique angle,
width factor, or fit justification) then our size can be 1/10 - 1/20 that of
most others. Cadalyst Labs just did a review and the test drawing they used
was the Wilhome.dwg and ours was 124 kb and Adobe's was 1.7 MB. Plus we
support the lines merge from AutoCAD. The program was specifically designed
to batch convert AutoCAD to PDF and we have customers doing 500+ pages to a
    single PDF.

If you're not using True Type Text in your drawings and you are looking to
use PDF files then you really should look at switching because the True Type
text can make such a huge difference in filesize. This is how the DWf gains
much of it's size advantage because they can treat shx text as text in the
DWF format since they produce the viewer and can redisplay it. But nobody
else in the Windows world (let alone Apple or Unix) works with shx fonts
except AutoCAD compatible programs. And if you need to use a True Type font
at say 85% width or 10% Oblique there are companies that can build one up
for you that then by programs like ours get embedded in the PDF so your
client can view it properly and you can have the advantage of small filesize
    with a special width factor.

One of these days we'll write a white paper on it all.

    Technically yes,
Legally: you need to buyt Acrobat Distiller Server instead.
