I need to place some trees in an Architectural model I've done.
No trees in 3DCC - does anyone know of any other source.
My own versions look a bit clunky - especially the pine tree

  2. Amazing how the mind works. When I saw the title of your message, I was
thinking about how a 3D FeatureManager tree would look! What would be
different? Could you look down into the depths of a part?? :)

    I have done this before...

This is a bit of a hassle but goto google and get google sketchup
    http://sketchup.google.com/
    the goto
    http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/
Search for and get a tree, open it, save as DXF, import it into SWX.
Warning these files can be huge.

If the free version of sketchup does not do a save as go to
http://www.sketchup.com/ get the full trial version and then you can
    save as from there

    P.S.

There is a new video tutorial (For free) at my blog on Smart components)
http://mountain-wave.blogspot.com/ keep in mind when viewing these that
the video on the post is poor quality richt click and save as the link
below the player and get a better copy to your computer or scroll down
and watch "how to get a podcast" to automate everything

Thank you all for those who are watching them I have hit 3000 downloads
of my vids! I almost think I am popular now....

Sorry but I have to get my plug in.

Could you map a few decals with transparency channels to planes normal
to the camera? Thats a pretty old arch viz trick. That would probably
    work in SWx

Doesn't Solid Works use the Lightworks engine in it's renderer. If so, you
can probably find something here for it: http://www.lightworks-user.com

  8. PhotoWorks 1 used LightWorks. PhotoWorks 2 uses Mental Ray.

thanks for the input - I'll try the trial version of sketchup.
given the lack of alternatives in 3dcc, maybe I should upload my (clunky)
trees to inspire a bit of competitive contribution......
