    Hi all,
Can anyone explain to me about 2D polyline? I saw this on one of our
contractor's dwg and I don't know what it is and how to create it.

A "2D" polyline is simply a standard POLYLINE or LWPOLYLINE. A 3D Polyline
is a polyline with vertices not all lie in the same plane.

I know what you meant, but for clarification -- a 3D Polyline's vertices *can* all lie in the same plane.

In fact, using the LIST command, a 3D Polyline and a 2D Polyline (not LW) appear the same with the exception that the 2D Polyline lists the width where the 3D doesn't.

    Hi el,

Multiple 2D polylines that create a closed shape, can then be extruded to create a solid. Multiple 2D lines that create a closed shape, can not. With those you must then create a region before being able to extrude them into a solid.

    Hi el,
A poly line is basically what its name suggests, which is many lines in a chain that act like one object. It can be exploded into lines that you are used to working with.
A polyline can be given a thickness, or used to make 3d solids, but i suspect this is not what you are asking about.
A polyline is sometimes used to define a shape such as a steel section, to make it easier to select. An alternative in this case would be to use a block.
To draw a polyline, simply type PL at the command prompt.
To edit a polyline use grips, or type PE.
Have a play with the different options that come up to learn what they do.

    Cheers,
    kev.

if it's a std polyline, why is it shown as "2D POLYLINE" type in the
property window, rather than "POLYLINE" type?
One more thing, in the object I saw that was described as "2D POLYLINE",
the line in it was much more liked the line created by spline. It's
end/turning points were not located exactly on top of their vertex. They
are curved to form a "spline" line. How to do that by polyline?

Oh, and after you PEDIT / Spline a polyline, the Properties Window shows it
as a "2D Polyline." As to why, you'll have to ask whoever it was at
Autodesk that decided to do it that way.
