Should a later version be installed over the top of an earlier version, ie 2001+ installed and moving to 2004? Or should the
earlier version be "uninstalled" before installing the later version?

If you're never going to use the old version again, uninstall it first.
You'll have all sorts of bizzarr problems if you do an upgrade install. In
my opinion, they shouldn't even offer it as an option.

If you're going to have to deal with lagacy data, or if your stuff contains
allot of surfaces or other fancy stuff, keep 2001+ and do a seperate install
of 2004. You'll then want to test 2004 with your data before committing
    yourself.

We have allot of I.D. type designs done with surfaces and such. Most of
these failed, to one extent or another, when brought into 2004.

    Be carefull

I generally agree with the other reply to your post (uninstall and then
install) but I just wanted to mentioned that I installed right over 2001+
and haven't suffered any problems yet. However, I've only been running for
    a day or so.

So far I've only been working with one small set of models and I've made
plenty of changes so I can't tell what's due to 2004 alone.

I did open up another model that started at 259 KB. When I saved it it
grew to 296 KB. I then tried Save As... with "Save As Copy" checked and
the copy is now 167 KB.

Not sure what this means but it doesn't alarm me too much. The model is
pretty simple--maybe it's worse for assemblies or more complex parts.

  5. No, no, no... that is not even close from my perspective.

    On average,..

A SW2003 file which was 1 meg is now 2-3 megs in SW2004.
Or, a 5 meg file is now 10-20 megs in SW2004.
A 125 meg project in SW2003 is now over 300 megs in SW2004.

Tell your VAR to tell SW to stop using Microsoft as a crutch. Tell them
to tell SW to develop their own file format optimized for CAD model data
as opposed to being optimized for organizational charts created by the
    average secretary.
