my HP 950 is on it's last leg... I think I'd like to look at a printer that
can make 11 x17 prints... anyone have any recommendations?

    TIA

  2. There was a recent thread here or on comp.cad.autocad
about this. Someone was talking about a recent Canon
    (9100?). Google it.

    My Canon BJC 4550 (c. 1996) can't last forever
so I took notice of the thread. In the mean time
    it just keeps running......

  3. My BJC 4550 gave up the ghost and I was looking at the 9100. I ended up
buying another BJC 4550 for $12 plus $10 shipping (on Ebay). It works great.
I figured risking $22 to avoid spending $300-$400 was the thing to do. I
have $100 worth of ink cartridges for the 4550 and if I just use those
before the current printer gives up, I've saved money.

  4. Maybe I should be stockpiling them, and buying up broken-down ones for
    parts.
It wouldn't take up much room in the yard... ; D

When yours died, how did it go? Belts? Roller?

  5. None of the above, it just quit working. I thought the print head was bad,
but a new print head didn't help. I really don't know what failed, but I
    couldn't get it started again.

When you buy an old used one, your risking losing your investment. I would
not have paid any more than I did. If this one fails, I'll probably buy a
new Canon. It prints up to 13X19 photos. I don't know if 13X19 paper is
    available.

  6. I am using the Cannon S9000 which has been updated to the S9100.
It works fine with 2004LT. We have a HP1220C in the office which also works
well. (does very nice photos on plain paper too)
All of those are inkjets so all that ink adds up.
The Cannons will plot up to 13x19 (if you find it) lol The HP plots up to
    11x17

  7. I have the HP1220C and just to make sure things are clear:
Both the HP and Canon units can use 13x19 paper but neither will do full
bleed (on any size paper). I bought the 1220 with the intention on doing
full bleed 11x17's and in order to do that you have to print on 13x19 paper
    then trim the margins off.

FWIW 13x19 paper is available (I have some) but unless you absolutely need
it, you'll be better off using 11x17 paper. 11x17 is much cheaper and more
readily available in lots of different papers (I use 20lb./92 brightness for
check prints and then 24lb/96 brightness for final prints of plans. For all
photo/image prints I use a premium matte photo paper).

If you print any kind of volume, you need a laserjet.

I recommend the Hewlett Packard HP5000N laserjet. Works like a champ,
the print counter says 90,0000 and it's always worked. Spits out
11X17's like a machine gun. The toner cartridge is supposed to be good
for 15,000 prints but I get more than that out of one. You can get a
new for about $80.00 on ebay. I think Office Depot wants $150.00.

I bought one from the company I worked for when they filed chapter 13
for $50.00! But you can find them on ebay for around 400 to 600 bucks.
I think when they first came out in 1999(?) they were over $2,000.00
    for a new one.
